It was HOT in Spring and now it is even HOTTER in Summer. If three days of over 90 degrees equals a HEAT WAVE what does two months worth equal.

It is so hot outside that I hate to even work with Heddy. But train we must so we try to work early and then I try to come up with something FUN and Cool to end with. I got kind of tired of her swimming in the river and ME standing in the sun tossing her toys in for her. SO I saw on Facebook that one of the Dogs over in England loves to DIVE FOR SAUSAGES. So I figured we would come up with an American version and cool Heddy down at the same time. I took a Hotdog sliced it up into little pieces then micro waved it to get some of the fat out.

Filled up a pan with water and …. TADA

HOT DOG becomes Wet Dog. I was amazed at how fast she figured out how to get the Hotdogs. and was soon vacuuming up two pieces at once.

<img style="border-bottom: 0px; So I ordered her one. It arrived yesterday and after work we headed down into the boat slip.

On the very first toss I realized we had a problem. The “Flottie” SANK …. BUT….. SO DID HEDDY…. She trotted into the water and just dove right in after it as if she had been doing it all her life.

SO I may not be able to toss the FLOATING FLAPPY out into the boat slip for her to retrieve but she sure is having fun with it in clear water. I wonder how deep she would go if we had a swimming pool?

<img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_11Q7Jv8o1xc/TCNz2qrcqkI/AAAAAAAAOp0/yGj0CHWBNqo/video16676bb83e43%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('1be80016-4806-44c7-834e-eb1310e7bd92'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-23542999029950112532010-06-20T08:46:00.000-04:002010-06-24T08:49:36.734-04:00HOT TIME IN THE SPRING???
Well we truly picked a rather warm day to attend our next Dog show. Our local club held a Sanctioned Match show on Fathers Day and even though SUMMER is not officially here till tomorrow morning you certainly could not tell that from the heat today. it was 97 degrees by 10:ooAM But no matter what the Show must go on RIGHT and Dad came to the SHOW!

So into the ring we went.

First Heddy had her official CGC test and other than being a total Terrier and WANTING to KNOW what was in the BUSHES outside the ring she did great. Even managed to ignore her Dad who was part of the crowd of people that she had to walk around through. The only small issue that she had was standing and allowing the judge to brush her. I never thought about the fact that I groom her up on the table. I guess she thought the brush was a toy or something and started to grab at it. But settled when I told her to STAY.

SO she is now LOCH CU HEDDWYN CGC

Next was our very first attempt at confirmation. Heddy was the ONLY Border Terrier Puppy so we had that wrapped up but it was a great learning experience. She is doing OK Still not standing solid on the table and after all the drilling with Rally and Obedience she sits often when we stop but it is a work in progress.

It was a very Pleasant surprise when she got not only best of breed but Group and Fourth Best Puppy in Show.

We also made another attempt at Rally and even in the Heat she did well again most of the errors were mine. So as soon as I learn to read and can calm my nerves down we may do pretty good.

If she could just learn to relax and walk on a loose leash we would really rack up some points. But we got a decent score of 83.

After which I promptly picked her up and dropped her in the kiddie pool and like any little kid she really did not want to come out even when it was time to go home.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-5912300640691628722010-06-16T16:22:00.000-04:002010-06-16T16:22:13.317-04:00Heddy tries Confirmation ClassLast night I had a meeting in Salisbury after work so we ended up arriving at the kennel club over an hour before our Rally class was due to start. I figured we would just hang out and watch the other classes. While waiting A very nice gentleman came over and was asking me about Heddy. (My favorite subject) Course it did not hurt that he was full of complements about her. He then asked if we were going in to the Handling class. I said no that we were not signed up. He said no problem He was the instructor and drop in were always welcome. WELL guess that ended that I was in the class. First I found out that my color was ALL Wrong. so... Collar OFF No more collars breaking her coat. Then He did not like her chain collar either it to was hard on her coat and my leash was too long. So one of the other ladies in class went and got me a proper show leash to borrow for class. NOW we were ready ... OR so I thought. I soon found out that I did not know how to walk. and that I was impeding my lovely dogs natural movement. ARE WE HAVING FUN YET. Actually YES I WAS. I have never met anyone that was able to correct almost everything I did and yet not make me feel like a fool. He explained why I needed to do things this way and DARN when I did what he said Heddy responded by NOT jumping and spinning and just walking along at a very nice pace. I learned so much and I was amazed I ENJOYED IT and so did Heddy. He even took the time to advise me on grooming and said that next week I should bring my grooming tools so he could show me a few tricks.
I was amazed that Heddy stood nicely on the table and let him go over her. The only problem we had was learning to STAND. I have worked so hard with her to learn to SIT when I stop that it is automatic. So NOW we are working the STAND and stay command to death. BUT as long as there is LIVER involved she will sell her soul.
Heddy thought this was a great warm up for Rally class and she had a great night at class. again most of our mistakes were MINE. I just can not seem to keep my feet still. Then when I think about keeping my feet still I forget to give Heddy the right commands. It is really tough when an 8 month old Border Terrier is smarter than You. I am just really glad that she is having fun.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-82641876065616394432010-06-03T20:27:00.000-04:002010-06-03T20:28:54.342-04:00Crabbing
One of the befits of living in Delaware and on the water is Crabbing. Now I am not to sure how that is going to work out with Border Terrier help. Last week-end we had our Grandsons for the day and we did some Crabbing from the bulkhead not to keep for eating just for fun. We would catch and then release them into the boat slip to watch them scurry back into the water.

Well in Heddy’s mind this was a GREAT NEW GAME. I am not sure if we should let the crab teach her not to touch or keep telling her NO! LEAVE IT! Because at some point she will meet a crab on her own.

<img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_11Q7Jv8o1xc/TAhIxaBE8pI/AAAAAAAAOZg/W_VJATyLCp8/videof7cab3c497b1%5B2%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('e4d6beaf-35de-4d63-adb5-e8fe4f8cc989'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-15505804458202859102010-06-02T10:54:00.000-04:002010-06-02T10:55:40.123-04:00BACK TO SCHOOL
OK Break time is over. After returning from Nationals I had every intention of Heddy starting Agility classes it seems that Heddy had other plans. As soon as we got home from Nationals Miss Heddwyn went into her first FULL BLOWN HEAT CYCLE. SO needless to say we did not get to go to the Agility class. I just do not think it would have been at all fair to Heddy’s Brain or to the Male dogs there to take her. The instructor AGREED. It seemed Heddy was the ONLY girl in Class.

So now that we are done with all the silly stuff. And Heddy’s brain seems to be coming back into focus a little ( OK I admit it her brain has never been totally in focus) I started looking for classes we could join. There are only two kennel clubs with in driving diatance and Everything had already started. Misipillion Kennel Club http://www.mispillionkc.org/index.html was not having a Rally class this time and we have already done PKT and CGC.

So I took a chance and sent an E-mail to the Rally Novice instructor of Salisbury Kennel Club http://www.SalisburyMarylandKennelClub.org/

Barb Walls. WOW are we glad we did. Class was last night from 8-9 and she had no problem with joining the class half way.

What a wonderful instructor. We ran into Heddy’s PKT Instructor as soon as we arrived so we felt very welcome. The Hour went by so fast and I learned so much. I have tried for several months now to learn Rally from the Internet but NOTHING beats havings someone explain and show you how to do something correctly. Both Heddy and I had a wonderful time. Unfortunately I was the only one tired after class. Heddy went home ready for more FUN.

Time to PRACTICE .
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-14098782722400159682010-05-28T08:54:00.000-04:002010-06-02T08:57:38.785-04:00Heddy has a Reptile Day
We have had a run on Turtle rescues around here and as always Heddy has to be right in the middle of it all. Our first short term guest was a newly hatched Painted Slider that luckily was discovered right before a large bunch of leaves was headed for the shredder. We were raking and noticed this small green disk. At first I was not even sure if it was alive but after a few hours rest in some water we released him into the boat slip all under the watchful eye of Miss Heddy.

As soon as I thought we were done with our turtles my son Wayne came home from work with a Box Turtle that he Rescued from the middle of the road. Now PLEASE understand I do not approve of removing Box Turtles form their environment BUT this guy was in the middle of the Highway and needed to be removed we will take care of him for a while then release him into a Sate Park where he works. My first dog show experience was also almost my last. I met some VERY wonderful people out there last week and I hope will stay friends with for a long time. by Connie Cleveland

On the occasion of my tenth anniversary, my husband asked me how I wanted
to celebrate. I asked that we take a very dear friend, my adopted grandmother
and one of the greatest of all the great southern ladies, out to dinner
with us.
At dinner, my husband, Brian, presented me with a diamond ring. It was
gorgeous and I was speechless, but even as I thanked him, I worried about
the expense and extravagance of such a gift. As if he knew that the next
line belonged to my grandmother, my husband excused himself from the table.
He was barely out of sight when she reached across the table and grabbed me
by the shoulder, "I know what you're thinking, I know you think he couldn't
afford it and it's too extravagant. I don't care if he had to put a second
mortgage on the house to buy it, don't you steal his joy! It's beautiful.
Accept it as the token of his love that it is and say nothing about how he
shouldn't have bought it for you." Then she repeated, "Don't you dare steal
his joy!"

That was the end of the conversation. She sat back in her seat, smiled at
my returning husband, and we had a lovely dinner. I took her advice and put my reservations out of my mind. The ring has never come off my finger, but
most importantly, I learned a wonderfully important lesson, never to steal
another man's joy.

Are you a joy stealer?
"You know if my dog hadn't gone down on the sit, I would have won the
class", said, unfeelingly, to the winner.

"I sure didn't think your dog worked that high a score."

"I can't believe you placed, I thought Jane Oneup and her dog would beat
you."

"I thought I had that class won! My dog had a great performance, " said to
the winner.

"Isn't that judge an idiot? I can't believe the dogs he put up!" said to
the winner.

"Boy, aren't you glad Mrs Winallthetime wasn't here today or you might not
have won."

"You passed that Master test because the water blind was so easy."
"That was the stupidest set of water marks I've ever seen. No trial should
end that easily," said to the winner.

Do you discourage or encourage fellow competitors? Do you tell them their
goals are too lofty and their dreams too big? Are you trying to be helpful
or trying to keep them from accomplishing something that you never had the
ability or perseverance to do yourself? It is equally as harmful to steal
joy by destroying the dream.

"No Basset Hounds get UD's," said to the owner of the Bassett in Utility
class.
"I've never seen a Rottweiler that could do fronts and finishes", said to
the owner of the Rottweiler practicing fronts and finishes.
"Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a UD and a Master Hunter? Do
you know how few people have ever done it?" said to the first time dog owner
setting out to do both.

When FC AFC OTCH Law Abiding Ezra had both his field championships and 65
OTCH points including all the necessary first places, someone had the guts
to come up to me, his owner, trainer and handler and say, "No dog will ever
be a field champion and an obedience champion." My jaw drops when I think
about it. Isn't it unfortunate that I remember this attempt at stealing my
joy much more than I remember all the cards and letters and congratulations
I received when those last 35 points were earned?

If you are willing to destroy someone's dream, perhaps you don't realize
that it is the JOY of pursuing the dream that keeps the dreamer motivated,
not just reaching the accomplishment.

My husband and I travel and compete together. I remember an event, early in
our relationship when I watched his Doberman fail articles. "Darn it, " I
said, as he came out of the ring," she didn't even try to find the right
one!" "Oh", he replied, "but, weren't her heeling and signals wonderful?"

Unknowingly, I had almost stolen his joy. He was celebrating the
improvement on the exercise that had been giving him trouble, and I was focused on the failure. Since that experience, Brian and I have learned that the best
response to a questionable performance, "What did you think?" That way, if
the handler is excited about some aspect of the performance, you can share
that excitement. If the handler is disappointed in another aspect, you can
share the disappointment. You are safely removed from being a joy stealer.

I hope you have a lot of dreams and goals for your dogs in (the coming
year). Undoubtedly there will be moments of disappointment as you venture
through the landmines of injury, failures and other setbacks. Remember that
the joy of the journey is worth the difficulties along the way and don't
let anyone steal that joy. Guard it well and at he end of the road you can own
it and revel in it with all the other memories of the trip."
I decided that the Comedy team of Nancy and Heddy had done enough damage for the day. SO I went over and pulled Heddy from the Rally Novice -A Class. and Volunteered to help. As I was helping the Steward I calmed down and told the steward what I had done and why. She said no puppy should be pulled for those reasons and asked the judge permission for her to be put back in the lineup. The Judge was wonderful and agreed with the steward. Telling me to go get my puppy.
WELL that is great except that because I had pulled her I did not bother to walk the course or really to even pay attention to what the course was. SO the very first time I read any of the signs was as we entered. WHOOPIE. HERE WE GO AGAIN.
I guess I was more relaxed since I was so busy reading the signs and processing the information. BUT Heddy had a great time. When I stopped she SAT. And when asked she went DOWN. In fact SHE must be able to read because I misread one of the signs and told her to down with out a SIT but she dropped to a sit first TEN did her lovely DOWN. The Judge laughed and told me that although I gave the wrong command my dog did it right.
She was totally frozen when I had to walk around her and even did a decent heel from the front ( we had never done that before that morning) So I left the ring a very HAPPY owner with a HAPPY Puppy. It doesn't get better than that does It? .... We went over sat down and watched the rest of the class. I really learned a lot watching the Novice-B. BOY now I see what I did wrong and will do it different next time.

The judge called all of the NOVICE -A class back into the ring. She asked if anyone had gotten there first legg. I just stood there. Novice ME I had no Idea that I WAS SUPPOSED to check the score board. The Steward again came to my rescue and told me that Heddy had a Qualifying Score and that YES we had JUST gotten our FIRST LEG. One of the other dogs finished their RN and then they announced 4th and third place. Suddenly they announced 2nd place and I was in a TOTAL state of shock in fact I had to check my arm band because they had JUST ANNOUNCED OUR NUMBER.
WE WON 2nd PLACE in RALLY NOVICE -A I still do not believe it.

From there we went straight up to the Terrier Races. I can not imagine where she found the energy but Heddy loved it. THe first trial run they ran with muzzles but ALL of the Puppies were so busy trying toget rid of the muzzles that no one ran. So since they were puppies it was decide that they could run with out Muzzles.

There were two Puppy classes and even though she was the youngest puppy she won her heat. When they had a race between the winners of the two heats. Well lets just say that I believe the Little Blue Boy that beat her must eat jet fuel for breakfast. WOW was he fast. He was not only a very Handsome Blue and Tan Border Terrier but VERY VERY determined. Even after his race was WON .

Heddy was very HOT and Tired from her LONG day so after a quick dip in the Puppy pool to cool her off we headed on down the hill and back to the Hotel Room where neither one of us had any trouble sleeping.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-3030142827389805712010-05-24T14:18:00.000-04:002010-05-24T14:18:47.554-04:00PRE NOVICE OBEDIENCE ...... hahahahahahahahaOk so again we arrived at FENC nice and early , remember I have NEVER shown a dog before so I really do not have any Idea how this all works. We find a nice shady spot for the trusty Prius and our stuff get it all set up for the day.

So with all of our stuff under control we headed up to watch the show and maybe see how it is done. I really enjoyed watching the other Border Terriers compete There is nothing like a Border Terrier in the Obedience Ring. And I quickly learned why everyone kept telling me that you always had to bring a sense of Humor into the ring with you. As even some of the very best trained Borders just sort of occasionally did their own thing.

In all the confusion it seemed they decided to move the Pre-Novice class up so I RAN and got Heddy and we checked in then it seems as soon as we checked in the decided that NO they could not do Pre-Novice NOW it would v=come LATER after the Teams. OK so take Heddy for a walk to calm down then come back up to watch teams. What FUN.
Then again they are looking for PRE-NOVICE. and NOW oppps no not now they are going to take linch first. At this point I am confused.
So I put Heddy away again. Only to hear them call me to the ring as soon as I get back from the car. SO I run back get Heddy and here we come. I am not sure if I even remember my time in the ring. I must have remembered to breath, cause I did not pass out. When I entered the ring I told the judge this was my first dog show experience EVER and smiled. Her response was well first take that thing off your pants. I had forgotten that I had a clip hanging form my belt loop. So much for brownie points. And so we began. FORWARD... I truly believe that Heddy knew just how upset and nervous I was as she did not do ANYTHING I asked. She DID HEEL beautifully but I think it was out of FEAR! I am not sure if she SAT one time when we stopped. THEN to just add icing to the cake when the judge came over for the STAND for inspection Heddy leaped up onto her and tried to kiss her WHOLE face. THE JUDGE WAS NOT AMUSED. I do not even think she smiled. ... So she said we could leave. I thought we had done so poorly that we were excused. SO I again PUT poor Heddy back in her crate. Only to have someone come running to find me saying where is Heddy you are needed for the long Sits and Downs. OH LORD.... Grabbed out of her Crate again in run back to the Ring. we are directed not to a place at the end of the line but RIGHT in the middle. So here we go SIT.... Heddy Sits so nice then plops down. BUT at least she stayed. Then the LONG Down. SO.... DOWN.... Heddy is in a lovely down doing great I am actually starting to relax... when suddenly Border Terrier tumbleweeds of Undercoat go rolling thru the ring.A little fluff gets past her but then A BIG BEAUTIFUL BALL OF FLUFF..... Well we all know where this went. Up went Heddy and Hooray look at me Mom I caught the ball. Again Judge was not Amused.
I truly wish I had photos or a video to share but the mental photos will have to do.
This time we truly were excuses and Heddy got her nap. just a short one....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-44291219709262785502010-05-24T13:51:00.000-04:002010-05-24T13:51:03.161-04:00EARTHDOG .... NOTWe are up at the crack of dawn after a very good nights sleep. Out for our morning walk greeting new friends along the way. Since I am not sure what time we should arrive or even what to do or exactly where we need to be. Heddy and I head over early. As is usual we are EARLY. In fact we are the second car there. Thank God for the first car as they KNEW where they were going and we just followed along.
We got all registered and began the LONG wait for our turn. All the other Dogs MUST have know what was going on because they were just so excited to get going. while Heddy just thought she was there to make lots of new friends
Unfortunately she also included Mr RAT in the category of NEW FRIEND. When it was finally her turn we went out to the IQ site. Heddy was so good she followed the sent trail and popped right down into the hole course then she turned around and came right out again. so I finally went over and told her to GET IT so down she went .......... and that was all there was. the Judge was so nice she rattled the cage she even finally opened the trap Heddy was there Happy as always just looking at MR RAT making friends. In fact she took it as far as to give him a kiss.
OK so we have now established that Heddy it just TOO YOUNG to kill Rats.
BUT at least she loved the tunnel and had no problems going in.

AH WELL tomorrow is another day
OBEDIENCE Pre- Novice and RALLY- NOVICE AUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-72474549817495756442010-05-24T13:32:00.001-04:002010-05-24T15:12:53.414-04:00Getting caught upWell it seems as if I fell of the face of the earth for awhile. But in reality I was a little down in the dumps and I also came home to a massive amount of work that had to get taken care of FIRST.
But putting all of that behind us. We are BACK!
Our first day in North Carolina was uneventful. We arrived promptly got lost and spent an hour finding our hotel. Never listen ONLY to a GPS. If I had used my eyes as well as my ears I could have seen the Hotel from the Highway and would have Known to turn Left NOT Right. But anyway eventually I knew I had to be wrong and called the Hotel. They were so nice and gave us proper directions directly to them. What a great place to stay. The staff came out from behind the counter to meet Heddy and give her a cookie, Oh YEA she's gonna like it here. Then helped me shlep all my stuff to the room. We went over to the Lodge and got our information. Which Heddy thought She should investigate further.

Since we had nothing else to do till tomorrow we decided to go find the show grounds. Nice drive through the Mountains. But there was no one around at the show grounds so Heddy and I took a nice LONG walk. We never did find out where they were doing Tracking so eventually we just headed back to our room for a nice quiet evening.

I may have made a mistake here.

We got up around 5:30 and got moving we were packed and on the road by 7 AM. Once again Heddy sacked right out in her Crate. What a great traveler. Made great time and arrived in NC at the Mountain Inn by 1:00 PM a total Road time of almost 12 hours. After unpacking we went out to explore the Show grounds and to give Heddy a little outside time. Had a nice walk ran into Carol and Cheddar and met lots of other folks and Borders. I think Heddy’s Head is spinning with all the doggie smells and sights. She is not about to listen to ANYTHING I have to say to her.

After our walk we came back to the room and Heddy discovered the Goodie Bag. I waked in just as she was finishing off the dog treats.

So from now on when I leave the room she will be staying HERE!

Well off to bed we learn about Earthdog tomorrow!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-64830963379905907732010-05-10T22:07:00.000-04:002010-05-10T22:10:08.415-04:00Hotels Are STRANGE
I think Heddy’s first night in a Hotel may be a very long night. Between all the strange smells and sounds she is having a very rough time settling down. I am very nervous about her barking so I am also not able to relax very much.

Our Drive here went well. took about 4 1/2 hours Heddy slept for most of it. We stopped for on nice long play/potty break. And to see the Sunset.

Tomorrow we will be back on the road BRIGHT and EARLY.

For now Good Night I hope!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-68447435051067346672010-05-10T12:57:00.001-04:002010-05-10T21:59:43.934-04:00National Specialty Road Trip Day 1How is it possible that one person and ONE 7 month old Border Terrier could NEED SO MUCH STUFF for just 5 Days away. The car is PACKED and I do mean Packed. thank GOD I am only taking ONE DOG and NO ONE else needs to ride with me. I am not sure where they would sit.

I have decided to split the trip into two parts . So as soon as I get my work done and I load Heddy into her Crate we will head for Emporia, VA for tonight that will be about 5 Hours then all we will have is another 5 hours in the morning. Maybe we will actually get there in time to see some of the tracking. We have never seen that. Oh what Am I talking About. WE have NEVER seen any of it. ARE WE THERE YET...........
Can you FEEL the excitement.
I have been reading Colin's Blogs to Heddy ( He is already there) Trying to get her ready for what lies ahead.
http://btsinmdspec.blogspot.com/ It sounds as if he is already having a wonderful time.
Well I guess if I ever plan to get on the road I had better finish working.
That is all well and good except for the fact that I now have to take her out to pee on a leash in the mornings and at night otherwise at 6 AM in the morning she hits the ground running to make a quick check of our property and see that we have not been invaded in her short absence.
OK I could even live with that AND the fact that she takes a swim to check and make sure that no one is hiding in the boat slip. BUT what is a problem is the fact that she does this while BARKING at full voice to tell those Critters GET OUT OF MY YARD!
Well I can except this she is a Terrier and she is allowed an opinion. AND I really do not want the Ducks and Canada Geese in the Yard, they make a terrible mess, BUT at 6 AM or at 11 PM I do not want the neighbors to want to strangle a Little Brown Dog.
Guess it has something to do with the fact that I complain about the neighbors NEVER ENDING BARKING MOPS! (Shitzus)
But when it is afternoon. Well no one ever told Heddy she was not a water dog. She swims as well as our sons Lab. I have the wet soggy cloths to prove it. How come when ever a dog is wet they just have to come and jump into your lap. And we are talking MUDDY Salt Marsh Water. Doesn't ever get better than that.
Sandy had been nice enough to offer to help me learn how to properly strip and groom Heddy.

So we got up early and made the almost 3 hour drive.

About half way there I realized that I forgot my camera so I do not have any Halfway done photos as I had planned but I sure learned a lot. Heddy handled the whole procedure much better than I expected. She really only complained when we got to the really tender areas. And so may I present my beautiful Border Terrier Loch Cu Heddwyn in her summer underwear.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-6179263202923916792010-04-18T11:52:00.000-04:002010-04-20T11:54:18.675-04:00Heddy Gets a Tunnel
When my husband heard that one of the things Heddy was going to try to do at her first show was Earth Dog he was concerned that she might not be able to go through a 9” opening or that she would be afraid of it since she had never tried it before.

I personally think it was just an excuse to use power tools and build something new.

But for what ever the reason Heddy now has her very own practice Earth Dog Tunnel and to say the very least she LOVES it.

She supervised the building of it. Having never seen a drill before she thought her nose really belonged where ever you were trying to work .

But at last we were done and ready to see what she would do with it. We had built it in six foot sections for storage and ease of moving it around.

So I tossed a Liver treat into and Heddy never hesitated even a little she was after the liver and out looking for more.

After a few runs with the liver she diced this was great fun and likes to hide from us inside her tunnel. And not only can she fit easily inside the 9 inch opening but she often turn around inside and come out the same way she went in.

Now I guess we WILL wait to see what she thinks of a tunnel with a RAT at the other end. No problems right. Not for Miss Heddwyn. She managed to lose all but ONE of her baby teeth and so she developed a double set of Canines on one side.

So off to the Vets to have a tooth extraction. Now when I have had a Tooth pulled it was a simple thing no Big Deal. And when one of the kids had to have a Baby tooth pulled because it was crowding the other teeth it was No Big Deal.

BUT when a dog has to have a PUPPY TOOTH EXTRACTED it is a BIG DEAL. I had no idea. She had surgery to remove the tooth it was almost one inch long and she even got a stitch to close the opening they made.

$270.00 later she has the proper amount of teeth in her mouth.

Comparing the tooth the Vet removed to the one she lost her self I can see why the bugger never came loose.

And never missed a single chew on her favorite Pizzel stick.

YUCK!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-16952598106555600732010-04-03T13:32:00.000-04:002010-04-13T13:35:03.847-04:00I Went Away and Heddy Changed
It happens sometimes everyone changes but I guess I was totally unprepared for how much a puppy can grow in just 3 short weeks.

Unfortunately Heddy was not old enough to go with us on vacation this year. We have a home in Hawaii and go there for Vacation. Hawaii has VERY strict rules as to allowing pets into the state and Heddy just does not qualify yet. We are working on it and she should be OK by next year. But in the meantime she got to spend three weeks at the Pet Spa.

Now this is no ordinary Kennel. This was a Pet SPA. It is run by a friend of mine that raises English Labs so I knew that Heddy would be fine. But leaving her was still very traumatic for ME. She handled it just fine. Like a kid off to school not even a look back just wanted to go play with all her new friends. According to the staff Heddy had something to say about everything and was soon running the place. She got along well with all the dogs so had lots of good social interaction.

Looks like I was the one that suffered most. It is a NASTY day here in Delaware, Cold rain, guess just perfect weather for a Border Terrier. Heddy was having a grand time enjoying the smells I was miserable and really not paying total attention to her waiting for her to GO already. Suddenly she must have seen something I did not see and TOOK OFF. She hit the end of her 6 foot lead and her nylon collar did what all safety collars do it broke open and she was OFF. And so was I as soon as I recovered my senses enough to realize what had just happened. I was amazed at how fast that little Brown dog can run! I am just very glad she was running to something and not after something. She took me through the neighbors yard down a hill and into the woods behind our office. BARKING ALL THE WAY. No problems following her. I think the stream might have stopped her not sure any way when I got to her she was very busy DIGGIN for I do not know what but she wanted it NOW. She was so very busy that she did not even try to get away but let me grab her right up.

Telling her what a good dog she was might have been the hardest thing I have done yet in dog training. I know what my Dad would have done to one of his GSP’s if it had run off like that. Lets just say times they have changed. A LOT!

I was so glad she went into the woods and not into the street. Our office is right on Rt 26 and while not a busy street by city standards it is steady and I can not bear to imagine the what ifs.

Lesson learned NEVER NEVER again take her outside with out a chain collar on!

Not even for a very QUICK POTTY Break in the RAIN!
I am just very glad to have her safely back tearing up her bed under my desk.

Where do they get all this energy from?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-891846583914171370.post-72492800974859894702010-02-28T14:31:00.000-05:002010-03-03T14:36:24.847-05:00I See the Future
Saturday for Heddy’s 5 moth birthday I took her, OK lets be honest here I took ME to the Salisbury MD Kennel Club Obedience Trials. Heddy got to sit in her crate in the car.

And to meet Carol , another Border Owner. Since I have never been to a Obedience Trial I arrived early and just hung out watching things learning what was going on. I saw Carol. Hard not to know who she was there was ONLY 1 Border Terrier entered. But thought I would not introduce myself till after he was done with his class.

View Full Album

Cheddar was so much FUN to watch. He does things HIS WAY. Reminds me of the poem When he was good he was very very good and when he was bad he was HORRID.

But Carol is wonderful and just laughed and took what he offered.

I introduced my self after the class. And it was if we had know each other for ever. She made me feel right at home. And explained all that was going on.

After he finished with his perfect long sit stays and downs. We went outside and introduced him to Miss Heddwyn. I am glad my camera was sitting on my desk next to me because I could not believe what she was up to.

She has decided to dig her way into her pillow. Dutchess became the first dog I ever helped to train. She was my first obedience project but also my very own circus act. But as it always does time moves on. I guess I spent a lot of time looking for a replacement for her.

My husband and I have had a lot of good dogs. I guess all in all over the last 40 years we have owned 13 dogs. From our first dog together a Min. Poodle Mignon, our Boxers, a Saluki, a Black English Lab, Drizzle, a Standard Poodle Jessica, to Shadow our rescued Doberman and Ben our Rottweiler that we lost 10 years ago at age 13. Even Dante our rescued Chihuahua, that I was never able to train at all but grew to love his very badness. He was at least 12 when we got him and the few years he had with us taught me to appreciate small dogs.

My last project was Absolute Scarlett a Jack Russell Terrier we got for our daughter. Abby the JRT has to have been the biggest challenge of my life. And when my husband suggested another Terrier well lets just say I was nervous about getting into that struggle again.

But I have never had anything like Heddwyn enter my life. She is ALL TERRIER a wonderful tough little dog that every guy would love to have around. But also my loving LAP dog that is always ready to cuddle and play. I do not know if all Border Terriers are like her but if they are I understand the devotion I hear from other owners.

Maybe it is because she has been with me ever since she arrived. It is wonderful that I can take her to work and our life allows her to be so much a part of our time. But I think it is also because she is just a WONDERFUL DOG! She is smart and pretty tolerant of all of the mistakes I am making in training her.

Dog training has changed in the 45 years that I have been involved with dogs. When I was 10 it was ALL about corrections Dad had the perfect hunting dog and I had a very well behaved playmate but I am not sure SHE was having fun. Even when I was training Ben I believed that the only way to control a dog was with total CONTROL and maybe even a little fear. I was the ALPHA and that was all that mattered. I had very well behaved dogs. Dogs I was always proud to take anywhere. BUT with Heddy I have learned about training with love and FUN.

It may take a little longer for her to figure out what I want her to do rather than me forcing her to do what I want when I want it. But I have to believe and hope that the lessons will last longer when she figures it out on her own.

SO FAR SO GOOD.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
