Am I A BIRD DOG

Today Heddy managed to get close to those feathered tormenters.  I really believe the Birds at the feeder thought she was part of the snow mound.  She stood Frozen ( in more ways than one) watching the birds at the feeder.  When she could take it no longer she finally broke her pose. Unfortunately or fortunately, depends on if you are the bird or the DOG, she found out that birds can FLY.

A Visit to the Beach

After spending TOO much time cooped up indoors we decided to try and find somewhere ANYWHERE that Heddy could run around and play!  So Friday afternoon when office hours ended we headed for Rehoboth and an afternoon at the Beach. I figured the sand would be one place not covered with SNOW!

Well I was almost right. most of the Beach was Snow free and Heddy got to chase a few Seagulls. But getting there was an adventure.  Most of the sidewalks were not cleared and the Boardwalk was covered with ICE and Snow three feet deep in some places.

Puppy Games

Well after a week of shoveling snow we were just thrilled to get another 24 inches of SNOW.  We were lucky to only lose power for a few hours. Looks as if some folks will be out for days.
Our biggest issue has been how to wear out a 4month old ACTVE Border Terrier when you are stuck inside. Heddy LOVES the snow BUT I do not. And even she can only be out in it for short periods of time. We decided to Play PUPPY GAMES inside.
We worked on Crate training. Door to the crate is open I toss a treat into the crate tell Heddy “Crate” and then as soon as she enters the crate and finds her treat I tell her to sit and then wait before I call her to me for anther treat.

Next game was climbing onto boxes of different heights and surfaces ending up on a foot stool .

Our final game is Heddy’s favorite FIND IT.
I would hide a piece of liver under a box and then let her search for it. then I would hide her favorite toy and let her find it. Of course I always have to trade piece of liver for the toy!
find it
A tired and HAPPY PUPPY!

Children ALL

Today our Grandsons came over to play in the snow. Since we live in Delaware there are no hills to sled on. BUT we live on a ancient sand DUNE almost a hill. SO since we woke up to 10 inches of snow in our backyard we also soon had two small boys along with our Border Terrier.

And since this is Delaware and we never get snow we do not own sleds. Grandpa to the rescue trash can lids, NOPE snow was way to deep, AH HA the tube it worked perfect even if Mom and Dad had to drag it up and down the hill a GOOD time was had by ALL.

Where do you Poo In The Snow ?

Well it is 8 PM and Heddy is on a POO strike. I can not say I blame her she gets lost in the snow when ever she goes out. Jumping and FLYING thru the WHITE STUFF is so much fun but OH she just can not seem to figure out where to squat. We have made 5 trips outside and I HATE the cold. Last time I measured it was 8 inches up near the house and much deeper out in the yard where it is blowing around.

But we have had a fun day of kitchen games. Heddy is the smartest puppy I have worked with in a very long time she really seems to enjoy our time playing. Thanks to all of the wonderful hints and ideas I have gotten from everyone online we are having so much fun. I never looked at training as games before it was always commands to to be obeyed or else negative reinforcement was applied. This is just so much more FUN. Today we have been working on going in and out of her crate on command. And sitting and down in the crate as well as waiting before coming out. As well as all of the wonderful things she already does. I know I sound like a proud MOM. But you know what that is just what I AM!

Well guess we will give it another go. The snow is so deep now that we will have to shovel a path and a spot for her. hope this helps. I am amazed that she has not had an accident in the house.
